Acrylics on canvas 4 x 5 feet by REJI joseph It’s very important that a painting speaks for itself and this is an example of this mandate. A language so unique to each of the viewer as though it’s a personal connection. I used several of the tools available to draw the viewer’s attention all around this incredible animal. Parts where I have embellished some of the key attributes by changing the colours to make some portions recede and some to come forward. I attempted to move the focal points around Sova since nothing is ever fixed, complete or comprehensive. Such shifts keep us guessing, makes our emotions change so swiftly that everything appears and disappears so quickly. As though to remind ourselves that nothing you see is real. Art is not just an extension of ourself, we paint with our soul. I change my styles in a way to challenge my boundaries not just to see how far I can go, but I am set on a journey to find something unique, unusual and beautiful. You will notice that I constantly try different styles and techniques. Else I will become far too predictable. We may not want to be resolutely categorised as a certain style of artist. This inhibits the creative bounders and as artists we need to constantly explore new forms of expression. For this we have just brushes and paint with endless possibilities. I allow myself to overflow, sometimes overwhelm, and proceed by constant alteration, which...

Acrylics on canvas12 feet x 5 feet This is a painting of Jesus in a way that was never been done before, in a way Jesus should be seen, a one of a kind. Artists constantly seek to discover new ways of expression, and it is through a wonderful journey. The art process makes its way through this magical voyage that consumes me completely – pushing me to find a way to materialise an intellectual concept into an art form. Hence the composition for Cristo Rei was critical. The face with all the colours show fortitude, the highly complex facial expression lends an intensely positive impression that is redolent of emotion, while the hands tell a story of compassion and glory. Christ the Redeemer was altered so much, that you find elements of both realism and fantasy develop and then disintegrate before your eyes. We may observe the lines the clothes make, it’s like a cradle which cups the heart which is one of the focal points of the painting. If you complete the circle formed by the arcs of the clothes the centre is the face of Cristo. We get inspired by anything unique and touching. We firmly believe in getting that unexpected, allowing for uniqueness and intrigue to lead the creation of a piece of art work. This is key in developing a concept that will resonate with the inner self of the viewer forever. The art subject was taken from Christ the Redeemer – the Art...

HAPPY ONAM Kathakaliby Reji Joseph Acrylics on canvas91 cms x 138 cms We challenge our own creative process, bending each rule – so many times that it’s not clear if we did it on purpose or by accident. The energy flows and then instinct kicks in during the meandering process and surprises the artist when he snaps out of his reverie and reflects on what he has done. The process is full of impulse and excitement that leads me to seek to manipulate reality. To push the viewer to isolate the artwork with the environment and convey a very personal response to the viewer. I always use my best ideas first, never saving it away for another project. When I do this fresh ideas emerge and this regenerating process goes on and on. The more I use my best ideas, better ones emerge. Hence, my work finds its own energy through this progression and new boundaries are breached. Tricks we use to bend our minds to try to make our work spectacular and connect with the viewer immediately. Hence departure from common sense approaches and my comfort zones has enabled me to find my artistic voice. Kathakali (കഥകളി) is a major Malayali form of classical Indian dance – a “story play” genre of art, but one distinguished by the elaborately colorful make-up, costumes and face. Seven basic makeup types are used in Kathakali – my artwork does not belong to this list. Onam is an annual festival holiday celebrated...

PTERIPPUSby Reji JosephAcrylics on canvas5 feet x 12 feet PTERIPPUS is a horse with wings, stemming from the Greek words pteros (winged) and hippos (horse). Pegasus was a pterippus so famous that many still refer to the species by his name, and great debate runs rampant over what is actual truth. History, however, has proven that there is always more than one truth. On Earth, he was known as Pegasus, the first pterippus. Like many creatures of the water, King Poseidon was more logical than emotional, though he eventually grew discontent. He had an eye for beautiful women and there was one who caught his eye, which in itself was a great feat, for she was not a woman at all, but a Gorgon, a creature of great power and unbelievable beauty. Her name was Medusa, and he seduced her. Many wonder how he could view her, for looking upon the face of a gorgon would turn one to stone, but the rumor is that his heart was already hardened from the cold ocean, and that alone saved him. “All this happened during a time when humans were trying to make a place for themselves among the so-called gods. Heroic men went in search of dragons and other creatures of terror to slay. One hero, known as Perseus, decided to slay Medusa, for stories had erupted that she had turned evil. He found her standing on a cliff overlooking the ocean and decapitated her. Medusa’s union with Poseidon...

. . SHADOWFOX By Reji Joseph 4 feet x 5 feet Acrylics on canvas He was “the Lord of all horses”. He was a descendant of Felaróf, of the race of the long-lived Mearas, the greatest horses of Middle-earth. Shadowfax was capable of comprehending human speech and was said to run faster than the wind. Originally belonging to the House of Eorl, Lord of Rohan, Shadowfax was too wild to be tamed by the Rohirrim. Eventually, Théoden, the 17th king of Rohan, gave him to the wizard Gandalf the...

Oils on canvas, 100cm X 100cm, 2014 Tigers are beautiful creatures and have always been a fascination for many. We have been losing tigers in the wild and its population declined by 97% over a century. There are just 3,200 in the wild today. Some of the subspecies have already become extinct (Caspian tiger, Javan tiger, and Bali tiger) while the South Chinese tiger is extinct in the wild. There are just around 400 – 500 tigers each of the Siberian and Sumatran tiger. We all have a role to ensure that there are tigers left. ...
