Sova

Acrylics on canvas 4 x 5 feet by REJI joseph

It’s very important that a painting speaks for itself and this is an example of this mandate. A language so unique to each of the viewer as though it’s a personal connection. I used several of the tools available to draw the viewer’s attention all around this incredible animal. Parts where I have embellished some of the key attributes by changing the colours to make some portions recede and some to come forward. I attempted to move the focal points around Sova since nothing is ever fixed, complete or comprehensive. Such shifts keep us guessing, makes our emotions change so swiftly that everything appears and disappears so quickly. As though to remind ourselves that nothing you see is real.

Art is not just an extension of ourself, we paint with our soul. I change my styles in a way to challenge my boundaries not just to see how far I can go, but I am set on a journey to find something unique, unusual and beautiful. You will notice that I constantly try different styles and techniques. Else I will become far too predictable. We may not want to be resolutely categorised as a certain style of artist. This inhibits the creative bounders and as artists we need to constantly explore new forms of expression. For this we have just brushes and paint with endless possibilities. I allow myself to overflow, sometimes overwhelm, and proceed by constant alteration, which you will see in time lapse video. We strive for pictorial harmony with the selection of line shapes and colours. It may take forever but and once we have it we stop. So the work takes a disproportionate amount of time and effort – which is nothing compared to the satisfaction it gives me.

Tell me what you think?

Did you know:
• Eyesight is a particular characteristic of the owl that aids in nocturnal prey capture. Owls are part of a small group of birds that live nocturnally, but do not use echolocation to guide them in flight in low-light situations.
• They are unable to move the eyes in any direction. Instead of moving their eyes, owls swivel their heads to view their surroundings.
• A group of owls is called a parliament.
• Many owl species have asymmetrical ears. When located at different heights on the owl’s head, their ears are able to pinpoint the location of sounds in multiple dimensions.
